A feather adorns the cover of my first book. It is there to symbolise a quill. The idea to place it there was made by the graphics designer. A symbolic gesture its potency immeasurable. What do you see when you look at a feather? What ideas float in your mind? A feather has the capacity to lift a bird into flight. Joined with many others, it delivers the ability to fly. The point of a feather is so formed that it was, and can still be, used as a pen. A feather symbolises peace and goodwill to all. It is a sign of hope for the future. No two feathers are the same, no two futures are the same. A feather is one of many parts of a bird. A feather is one of many possible futures. You hold a feather in your hand. You handle it carefully, for it is fragile. You hold your future in your hands. Handle it carefully, for it is your life. Symbolism is not lost on me, let it be evident on you. Everything is, everything is connected. Do you think the feather is there by coincidence? Think again, it is not, it has a place. You have a place, find it, own it, live it. Honour yourself, honour your place. Treat everything with respect. A feather in your hand today, tomorrow it is the world. © Gary Dodd 2006 |
