In a child’s eyes everything is new, interesting and inviting. They want to touch, taste, listen and see. Absolutely everything has something of interest. With no previous knowledge, no history, no background, everything can be learned. Even apparent dangers to others are novel and inviting to a child. The challenge for parents is to allow their child to discover and develop. Tempering these actions to ensure they are done with safety. At first, the child will not understand the limitations placed on them. The child will complain, cry and get cranky. Take the time to explain your reasons. Children want to learn, and want to listen. When you make the effort, the rewards are great. Encourage curiosity, embrace learning, guide them with care. A child’s eyes beam with enthusiasm, nurture it and develop it. Their life is just beginning, help them to embrace their adventure. Think back to when it was all new for you. Remember the feelings and use your memories to help your child. Life begins with much to see and learn. Be there, be aware, and enjoy the ride. © Gary Dodd 2005 |
