Each year on this day many of us pause to remember. The fallen, the injured, the lost, the sacrificed, the obliged, the volunteers. Women and men who gave of themselves for our country. People who are still on active duty. People who bear the injuries of conflict. People who have lost loved ones. People who remember friends who gave for their country. We remember everyone. For the Anzac spirit is more than remembering the sacrifices from conflict. The Anzac spirit is the bond that exists between all of us who live in our country. It also bonds us to citizens of our closest neighbour, New Zealand. It bond us to citizens of other countries around our world who fought with us, and against us. For the Anzac spirit does not discriminate, it does not alienate. It encompasses all who come in peace and remembrance. It is the essence of the connection between individuals, groups, nations, all who inhabit our Earth. The spirit of Anzac is the human spirit personified. Share in the spirit, celebrate the spirit. Remember the past, learn from the past. Step forward into a new future, step forward into a future uniting us all. The Anzac spirit, remembering, acknowledging, honouring, connecting, uniting. We are all part of this spirit, let us all share in it today. © Gary Dodd 2008 |
