I sit here tears falling down my face, my emotions overflowing. To some, my appearance may be embarrassing. To me, it is beauty, it is natural, it is life. A lady, a dear friend, a neighbour, is seriously ill. I see her pain, I yearn to help. Yet, there is little more that I can do. I can be me as always, act as me as always. Illness is a complication of life. It impedes us, it injures us, it challenges us, it stretches us. Yet, it is also part of life. It teaches, it awakens, it alerts us, it modifies habits. I digress, this poem is about love, the love shown by another. It is not physical love, it is not romantic love. It is love of life, of nature, of surroundings, of everything. My dear friend has taught me above love in its purest form. Her love of her pets, emanates in their happiness. Even if a harsh word needs to be said, it is done with love and reassurance. Her love of her plants so beautiful. It is like they brighten up every time she comes near. Her simple philosophy of life endearing her to all. A very private lady whose influence, sincerity, generosity has touched all. It is her spirit, her love, that draws everyone near. Love takes many different forms. It can last a moment, a year, a lifetime. In the form shown by my friend, it evolves, it expands, it nurtures, for eternity. As a student of life, I am humbled by my friend. A teacher of extraordinary capacity, a friend happy to listen. I cherish what I have learned, what I am learning, what I will learn. Even in illness, I see her strength, her compassion, her undying love of everything. I am honoured, I am privileged, I am in awe of my friend. In respect of her wish for privacy, her name is not mentioned. I know who you are, you know who you are, and I am sure many others know who you are. You have touched a neighbour, a village, a community, the world. Your gift of love will be remembered by all. You have opened my eyes, my heart, my soul, to the beauty of love. I am sure that I speak for everyone when I say, thank you. A simple life, a simple journey, so profound, the effect has touched all. © Gary Dodd 2005 |
