A few weeks ago I hit what I would term “rock bottom”. There was so much negativity around me that I just wanted to escape. I withdrew from classes, I cancelled appointments. I planned to keep to myself. I even withdrew my book from sale. To do so, I visited the only shop selling my book and ask for it back. The young lady who owned the shop did not want to fulfil my request. When I explained my situation, she reluctantly agreed. In doing so, the young lady also left the door open by saying that I am welcome back anytime. Her offer was made with compassion, with dignity, with sincerity and genuinely. It was heartfelt, honest, respectful and open. I was deeply touched by her gesture. If anything, it was a signal that things were changing. For a simple invitation led to a profound effect. Instead of withdrawing, I found myself almost continuously amongst others. It was clear that withdrawing was not the answer. I sat, reflected, listened, and opened up. Within days I was back at that shop with my book in hand. True to her word, I was welcomed back with open arms. Without doubt, this lady’s invitation did more to heal my pain than anything else. In short, it was the perfect response to my situation. I am humbled by her generosity, her faith, and her confidence in me. I am forever grateful for her kindness and integrity. I will always remember the day that I was told “the door is always open”. © Gary Dodd 2006 |
