A few years ago, while on holidays, the title of a book, and the contents of it popped into my head. Some months later, work started on the book project. As part of the work, I obtained the URL (website address) of the book’s title. Some time later, with the book complete, I started on its website. As always, over several iterations, it was up and running. A search using online search engine, revealed something startling. The title of my book, coincided with, the teachings of a very esteemed religious figure. At first, I was shocked. Then, I immediately modified the website, to ensure that, anyone finding it, did not confuse my work, with the teachings of this religious figure. Fast forward a few years, and sure enough, almost every hit on that website, was connected to, the teachings of this figure. So, in the interests of honouring those teachings, and ensuring that searchers do not waste their time on my site, I have removed my content, and in time, will release the URL, when it expires. Of course, that does not stop someone else securing it, and using it for their own purposes. At least, I am not distracting others. For the teachings of this figure, are valuable to many of our world. And I, for one, do not want to distract those people, from those teachings. A sense of satisfaction, now emanates from within. Knowing that, I have honoured and respected another’s work. Maybe in time, others may also do the same. Maybe in time, we will all respect each other’s work? Of course, that is bucking the current trend of plagiarism. The cut and paste mentality of today, is holding us back. For one, I share a fraction of what I have written. Simply because, others do not respect the author’s rights. Taking another’s work is theft. It ignores their rights, it ignores the potential of the person taking it. For shortcuts, only leave you, short changed. For I know that everyone and anyone can create what something similar to what I create. All they need to do, is believe. Plagiarism, theft of another’s work, does not help, it hinders. If you need inspiration, start with a few words of another. Explore them and allow your own words to come out. It is only the inner critic that stops you, from writing. If you use another’s work, always, always, always, credit the author. If not, you are liable for plagiarism. You hold back our creative potential. You hold back your creative potential. Plagiarism, easy to do. The question to consider, is it really worth it? © Gary Dodd 2011 |
