On this day of this month eight years ago, a young man, this young man, walked into a printing factory. He was there to pick up the first few copies of his first book. The sense of anticipation, of excitement, of exhilaration was palpable. Here he was about to embark on a journey that would forever change his life. The moment had arrived. A package was placed into his hands. On the front of this package, was a copy of the front cover of his book. He felt like his heart stopped for the briefest of moments. For the sense of achievement was without parallel. Here, before him, was his first book. For a man who had never been a father, it was like the birth of his first child. Such was the incredible euphoria that consumed him, and still does, to this day. After collecting his books, he journeyed to what was, and still is, his favourite place to enjoy another favourite thing, afternoon tea. He proudly showed his book to many of his friends at that location. All of them were delighted with the result. Over the next eight years, the journey of this book would take it to almost every corner of our world. Anyone who took the time to open it, found the book uncannily perceptive, of that person at that time. Such was, such is, the magic of this man’s first book. It really is an extraordinary first. Little did this man know, how special his first book was. Yet, time after time, it proved itself, in the hands of almost anyone who opened it. So it is on this day, that he celebrates the eighth anniversary of the birth of his first book, “A nod and a smile.” © Gary Dodd 2011 |
